A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is a profound secret and mystery to every other.

When the day is creeping up on us and we must put in order the chaos of the night.

Last night, I sat next to a gentleman at dinner, and he asked me in some fury why it was that our city should help those who do not help themselves.

By "those" he meant the many fallen women that we see around us every day, and their offspring, many who rely on this hospital today.

I replied, "The two grim nurses, poverty and sickness, bring these children before you and preside over their births, rock their wretched cradles, nail down their little coffins, pile up the earth above their graves. Their unnatural deaths form one third of the annual deaths in this great town."

"But what of God?" he piously replied.

"What Of him?" I said. "I feel sure God looks leniently on all vice that proceeds from human tenderness and natural passion."

I hope we will, too, and give generously tonight.

"How do you feel?" / "Oh, I don't feel comfortable." / "Oh, I'm so sorry, we the group, we're feeling..." Do you know, one of the greatest problems of our age is that we are governed by people who care more about feelings than they do about thoughts and ideas? Now, thoughts and ideas, that interests me.

1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Did America go cap in hand and ask Tojo for a peaceful negotiation of terms? Did she turn her back on her own citizens there because the islands were thousands of miles from mainland United States? No! No, no! We will stand on principle, or we shall not stand at all.

With all due respect, sir, I have done battle every single day of my life and many men have underestimated me before. This lot seem bound to do the same, but they will rue the day.

It used to be about trying to *do* something. Now it's about trying to *be* someone.

We will stand on principle... or we will not stand at all.

Gentlemen, if we don't cut spending we will be bankrupt. Yes the medicine is harsh but the patient requires it in order to live. Shall we withhold the medicine? No! We are not wrong. We did not seek election and win in order to manage the decline of a great nation.The people of this country chose us because they believe we can restore the health of the British economy and we will do just that! Barring a failure of nerve.
